Lately it seems that I post here only to rant about italian politics...

What is disgusting me is the whole italian TELECOM thing. For the (fortunates?) non-italian: Telecom is the most important telephonic company in Italy. Once it was state-controlled, but since several years it has gone private. Now it's on the market, and all the political class seem worried that the company could pass under the control of a stranger society (they talked about AT&T, but they retired from the competition). But maybe we have a Savior! It seems that Mediaset, with others companies, is thinking to make an offer for the control of Telecom. Mediaset is the company controlled by Silvio Berlusconi, our ex Prime Minister and chief of the opposition to the current government. Some well informed voices are saying that the current government is happy with this situation, hoping to "mollify" Berlusconi about the reform of the italian electoral system...

If this acquisition of Telecom should happen, Berlusconi will control 3 national TV channels, one of the most important publishing houses in Italy (Mondadori), several newspapers and the major telecommunication company of the country. Conflict of interests anyone?

So, mark this:

If this is going to happen, I'm going to never vote again anyone who is in the current government or majority

They talked for years about the conflict of interest, saying that it was a peril for the country. I agree, it is. The didn't do anything during the first Prodi government (but it felled quickly). Now they have the occasion to do something, but no, it is better to search an agreement to make a new election law to keep their asses on their seats...
I so hope that this is not going to happen, but knowing our political class I'm so worried...

Here in Italy there has been recently some discussion about this issue. The Left (at least, a part of it) proposed not the gay marriage "à la Zapatero", but simply the PACS ( which is an acronym for Civil Pact of Solidarity and factual union), which basically will give juridic validity to non-wedding unions. Great part of the Right and the Catholic Church are against it. The sad thing is that, again and again, the Church is trying (successfully, alas) to influence the italian political life. They dared to say that PACS will be uncostitutional, without having ANY authority at all to judge on such matters: this is matter for the Constitutional Court, not for the Italian Episcopal Conference. It's sad to see that in Italy separation between State and Church is still a very long way to come. The Pope or some Cardinal talks, and Italian politicians are all jumping...

Please post this in your journal if you are for gay marriage.

1) Being gay is not natural. Real Italians always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, air conditioning and plastic surgery boobs.

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behaviour. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in the world.

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans
